Someone asked me the other day," How do you have a holistic life?" I dwelled on this question for a while and I realized the answer had simply been in my life all along. I remember my parents being content in life and now I know why.
I realized that since I am living a life through the teaching of Ayurveda which talks about the four dimensions of living a holistic life. These dimensions are
a. Physical Dimension:
b. Mental Dimension
d. Social Dimension
e. Spiritual Dimension
Physical Dimension:
We care for our physical well-being through good food, water, air, environment, movement, and sleep. By nourishing our bodies in these ways, we maintain our physical health. We are generally aware of our physical needs and strive to meet them regularly. When we neglect this aspect, illnesses often manifest in our physical body.
Mental Aspect:
Our thoughts are the food for our mind. Just as healthy food nourishes the body, positive thoughts nourish the mind, while negative thoughts harm it. Just as we are selective about the food we consume, we should be equally mindful of the thoughts we entertain. Regularly assessing the "mental food" we take in helps us maintain a healthy mindset.
Social Aspect:
What is society? It is the collective of people we interact with. Trust in those around us fosters a strong and supportive community. For example, once a neighbor of mine broke my trust by revealing a secret to my parents, which left me heartbroken, and I stopped talking to her. But did I stop making friends? No! Instead, I became more discerning about who I let into my circle. So, having a trusted social circle nourishes us from within.
Shifing to a new country USA 2 years back, I had to really work hard to redesign my social circle and its still my biggest struggle.
Spiritual Aspect:
The word "spirituality" stems from the Sanskrit term "Adhyatam," meaning "the study of self." Just as Buddha explored the self to deeply understand all aspects of life, we must examine our inner being.
Our actions, or karma, shape who we are. The total of our actions influences our character, just as what we eat shapes our bodies.
This is a continueous learning for to know my self and the more I study, the more I am able to find meaning of life is ultimetly knowing yourself truely and living for others.
So, According to Ayurvedic wisdom, when we nurture all four aspects—physical, mental, social, and spiritual—we cultivate holistic health.
